Last Tuesday (Sept 30), Lucas started to throw up. By Thursday I realized that it was more than just a little mucus in the back of his throat, so I took him in to see his doctor. Dr Whiting thought it was just a virus since he had a bit of an infection in his right ear. So he prescribed an antibiotic and sent us on our way. The vomiting got worse the next day, so I wondered if maybe he had an allergy to the amoxicillin. The Dr's office said that it can upset infant's stomachs and to give it to him after he had been fed, but his vomiting continued. On Saturday he was no longer having wet diapers and I was getting worried. I got a hold of the Dr on call and he seemed to think that I was over-reacting and explained that he probably wasn't vomiting as much as I thought. Then on Sunday he did urinate a little but it was a strange orange color (like candy corns). Soooooo.......Monday I called my Dr back and he had me bring him in. Lucas had lost 17 oz since his appointment on Thursday, only 1 oz bigger than his birth weight. I told Dr Whiting that he was vomiting eveything he ate. Sometimes he would hold it down for as long a 4 hours, it seemed that nothing was getting out of his stomach. They took a urine sample and sent me to the hospital to have some blood tests, take x-rays and give him an iv to re-hydrate him. He was so patient while they poked him several times and started the IV. Then we took him to get an x-ray on his stomach. He had to drink 2 oz of that pasty barium drink, and since he was starving, he chugged it down. As soon as the radiologist got a good view of his stomach and intestines he knew immediately what it was....Pyloric stenosis. Pyloric stenosis is caused when the muscles around the bottom of the stomach get too strong and food can't pass into the intestines. Ah-ha! What is it that they say about mother's intuition??? Even though it is sad that he has to have surgery, I was so relieved to know what was wrong, and to have all of my worries validated. It made me mad that that Dr on call brushed it off as mommy paranoia.
Since he is such a little guy they decided to send us to Primary Children's for surgery. So here we are....waiting. We saw the surgeon’s nurse practitioner last night and had an ultrasound this morning to confirm the diagnosis. They say he will have his surgery sometime this afternoon but haven't given us a time. I feel sorry for him though, he is very hungry - he hasn't been nursed since 7:30 am yesterday (Monday) and he won’t get anything for 8-18 hours after his surgery and then only 1 ounce every 2 hours. They have a tube going through his nose down to his stomach to drain any bile and that bothers him, he keeps gagging on it. He has been amazing though, not much crying at all. I am sure he is wondering why we aren't helping him, just hurting him more. I am anxious to get this over with and get him feeling better!

Thanks for the update, we have you guys in our prayers! We love ya!
How scary! And he hasn't eaten for so long... poor guy. Good for you on being persistant. I hate it when doctors just brush you off as being a "worried Mom". I have heard too many stories where Mother knew best. Sometimes those doctors need to just take the time to listen, especially when you are on baby 5 and have a pretty good idea of what is normal and what is not. I hope the surgery goes well and poor Lucas can finally eat something.
I'm so sorry you all have to go through this. You are in are thoughts and prayers
Poor Lucas! But from the sound of it he's being very brave. Your sister told me the surgery went well. I'm so glad. Hang in there. Let me know how I can help.
